Edtech Challenge #1

Summer break is officially over (at least for most of us). So it is time for the very first edtech challenge! During the first week of school we spend a lot of time establishing classroom rules, routines, and procedures. So the edtech challenge for the first week of school is to use some kind of video recording technology (an ipad, flip camera, your cell phone) to record your students practicing various classroom procedures and then post them online! We all know how important it is to reinforce classroom and school routines and procedures with our students (even the older ones). During the first week of school we practice how to line up quietly, how to walk in the hallways, how to sign up for lunch, etc... We remind the students of the playground rules, the cafeteria rules, the bus rules and more. Then in January, we often have to revisit these rules and procedures again. Wouldn't it be great to get our students really engaged in this necessary (but rather boring) process. Older students can work in groups to storyboard and create short video clips of different classroom procedures. For younger students, the classroom teacher can record the video as the students demonstrate the routine. These video clips can then be uploaded to a teacher youtube account and inked to your class website or the school website.

Here are some things to consider as you attempt this edtech challenge:
  •  Make sure that students have parental permission to be recorded and posted online. If permission is not granted, then give the student a behind the scenes job like camera operator, video editor or director.
  • You will need to have a youtube account or use another video hosting site such as vimeo
  • Foster student creativity by allowing them to script and storyboard the video clips and make decisions about camera angles and editing.
  • Promote student collaboration and communication by allowing students to work in groups.
  • Model digital citizenship by following copyright and fair use guidelines.
I hope you have fun with the edtech challenge! Please leave comments to share your experience (and links to the videos) with others. Happy first week of school!

  2. This will be a great way to extend the way we use technology to enhance learning!

  3. I am so excited to be part of a district that has so much support and so many resources in regards to technology. I have a lot to explore and learn, so I am going to be a trier with the Edtech Challenges. I had started at the end last school year video taping my students' discourse during math workshop in order to help them strengthen their "math talk". I am planning on continuing this initiative. I am excited to use the ipads to help with this and your blog inspired me to send a proposal to donorschoose.org for a project that would enable me to get a flip cam. My proposal is in the process of being reviewed, but I will keep you posted. Thanks for your efforts, Amy!!!

    1. I love that idea! I'm sure the kids enjoy watching the videos and are excited to practice "math talk". It is so important that students really understand how to articulate their thinking when working in groups during math workshop. The same goes for other subject areas too. In reading, students can record book talks. Teachers can also use the videos for formative assessment.

  4. Amy,
Love the idea of EdTech Challenge! And what a great idea to video the routines, procedures and rules. I couldn't agree with you more about the January slide and now a teacher doesn't have to verbally go over them again, all the teacher has to do is reshow the video!

What is the last day the videos can be submitted? Thanks EdTech team for inspiring the techie in me! Maddie

  5. Made a video today of my kids modeling how to line up and walk properly in the hallway. They loved it! Just have to figure out how to upload and share the video. Do I get a prize? ;)

    1. Your students did a great job with the skit! I'm sure they had a great time with it. And when they forget to do their homework- you can just replay the video for them!
